Strategic Vision
Creating New Possibilities for the Next Century of Excellence
Wilson’s 2015 Long-Range Plan, updated annually, is essential to our continuous pursuit of excellence through improvement, innovation and adaptation, while holding on to all of the things that have made Wilson so special for generations. The strategic planning process we embarked on to develop the plan involved representation from our many constituents – trustees, faculty, administration and parents. We looked internally and externally; evaluating trends in independent education, global and national strategic themes, Wilson’s performance trajectory and salient trends related to Wilson specifically.
What emerged from the 18-month process is an ambitious vision that is updated annually to guide the school over a five to seven year view. The plan revolves around three strategic pillars: Leverage Our Global Competencies, Seek New Revenue Sources and Establish Excellence in Marketing. We feel strongly that our focus in these areas will set Wilson apart as a leader and innovator in independent early childhood and elementary education well into the next century.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why create a Long-Range Plan?
The strategic planning process, which occurs every five to seven years at The Wilson School, provides an important framework to guide the school in fulfilling its mission. In essence, the plan establishes the big picture of where we are, where we are going and how we are going to get there. Not only is the planning process a best practice for Wilson, the National Association of Independent Schools recommends that all independent schools engage in this process as well.
Who is responsible for establishing the Long-Range Plan and moving it forward?
Creating the Long-Range Plan is one of the most important activities of The Wilson School Board of Trustees. Led by a small committee of trustees, the most recent planning process began in April 2013. Coming out of the retreat, three sub-committees were created to explore the three primary areas of focus: global competency, new revenue and marketing. These committees engaged the help of other trustees, Wilson faculty and administration, parents, and in some cases, outside consultants to take a more in-depth look at each topic and generate recommendations for moving forward. From there, attention was strongly placed on the goal setting and implementation process, with significant involvement from faculty and administration. With priorities and goals established, it is the work of the school’s administration to lead the implementation of the plan, with board oversight of annual updates and bi-annual reports to the parent community.
How can I get involved and learn more?
One of the wonderful benefits of The Wilson School is our close connection with the school community. Anyone who is interested in learning more about any of the strategic pillars in more detail or the direction of the school in general, is encouraged to contact Thad Falkner, Head of School, to schedule a time to meet with him and/or members of the Long-Range Plan committee.
