Art
At The Wilson School, we believe that art is vital to every child’s education. In fact, art is part of every student’s education from Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Creating art develops self-esteem, self expression, cooperation, problem solving-skills, and an appreciation for other cultures. Furthermore, art helps develop fine motor skills along with hand-eye coordination. Cross-curricular units frequently are implemented in order to support students’ understanding of other subjects. Above all, art stimulates creativity and problem solving as students learn about themselves, others, their environment, and about art itself. Visual art cultivates the whole child.
Beginning in the early grades, students explore various art materials and techniques, starting with drawing and progressing through three-dimensional projects. In the intermediate grades, students explore art history, tour the St. Louis Art Museum and work on projects related to the exhibits, and incorporate traditional arts and crafts into learning about historic French settlements in the region. |
