Why Wilson |
Our MissionTo prepare students for success in an ever-changing world, our exceptional educators combine classic and innovative methods within a warm, nurturing environment.Providing our students:
Academic EducationParents and teachers alike often observe that when they walk into The Wilson School, it just feels right…like home. The school's warm, supportive environment provides children with opportunities for success, both academically and personally. From the Head of School on down, every teacher is committed fully to providing an outstanding academic education for each child. CreativityAt Wilson, nurturing a child's creative abilities goes beyond creative writing, visual arts, music, and drama. It begins with child's play - working with blocks, dressing up, manipulating materials and equipment. Problem-solving, science projects and writing strengthen the child's creative abilities. A vertical curriculum in every subject area from preschool through sixth grade ensures that each year builds on a strong foundation in the arts. School assemblies, poetry readings, sixth-graders' speeches, dramatic performances, the school band - all develop the self-confidence that comes from taking risks in a supportive environment and succeeding. Social ResponsibilityThe Wilson School is a supportive community for students and their families. Activities such as the "Buddy Program," Student Council, our school-wide motto and character education program - Make Your Mark A Good One, and the many school-wide traditions are examples of this community atmosphere through which everyone can become a responsible member of the Wilson community. The Wilson School's Buddy Program pairs early childhood students with upper-grade students to help the school's youngest get to know the ropes and to help the older children form caring relationships. "Buddies" often stay special friends, and it's not unusual for parents of buddies to develop family friendships. The Wilson School Student Council allows children to develop their own sense of community and responsibility. In ways to which they can relate, they contribute to the school community, and they learn-at an early age-that it is possible to make a difference in the lives of others. DiversityAt Wilson, we believe our separate heritages, beliefs and choices of expression help define us as individuals. Our commitment to learning about one another and the larger world unites us as a community. It's a matter of perspective: gender, age, race, religion, economic status, ethnic origins. Our students are exposed to teachers who reflect a broad spectrum of role models. The "family body" at Wilson is just as diverse, and our strong belief in diversity drives the admission process. Physical EducationAt Wilson, physical education is more than just sports. The physical education program emphasizes health, responsible behavior, good sportsmanship, and individual and group sports to help students develop a sense of responsibility for their own physical well-being. The Wilson Wolves soccer, baseball and basketball teams (five-year-olds through sixth grade) participate with other local schools in friendly competition. Parents volunteer to coach. Team sports build school spirit, friendships and other life skills that last long after elementary school. |
