Wilson School
Music Program - PK through Sixth Grade
Music at Wilson focuses on equipping the child with musical skills and knowledge to discover and pursue their own creative abilities
Begin with song! The voice is the child’s first instrument, therefore we begin with singing as the core of the preschool music curriculum.
Instruments are an extension of the child’s body and are introduced in sequence throughout a student’s Wilson education: unpitched percussion (i.e. small drums, rattles, triangles); xylophones; recorders and large drums. Students do not ‘specialize’ in a certain instrument, but gain experience on all of them.
Music reading begins with pre-reading activities in SK, first grade and second grade. Students learn to write music as part of this process. Music reading books are first presented in the third grade and subsequent books are added each year.
Preschool classes attend music twice a week in half groups. Grades one through six attend music three times a week. All students in grades two and three attend Junior Choir as their third weekly music class. All students in grade four attend Drum Ensemble for their third weekly music class. All students in grades five and six attend Senior Choir for their third weekly music class.
