January 9, 2012

We have many exciting this planned for 2012 in first grade. In the next few weeks first graders will learn about and compose their own autobiographies. This is in preparation for our unit on Famous Americans, during which students will study and write their own biographies about a famous American of their choice. To prepare for this unit, first graders will be taking a field trip to the Missouri History Museum where they will learn about Charles Lindbergh and other Americans who have ties to our city and state. Mark your calendars! We will be sharing our Famous Americans projects during an assembly on February 22!

Happy Hollidays everyone!

November 10, 2011

Yesterday the first graders performed a fairytale they had written about fairness. For the past few weeks we have been studying the genre and after discussing the major elements of fairytales, we decided to write our own. You can check out some scenes from our performance here: November 9th Assembly

October 19, 2011

We have just completed our social studies unit on families. As part of our unit, students drew family portraits, decorated family crests, and wrote stories about family traditions that were special to them (all of which are now on display in our classroom). We have begun learning about fairytales and shortly will begin writing a fairytale as a class around our MYMAGO theme, fairness. We will be presenting this during assembly on November 9. As a suggestion from parents, we have added our list of first grade reading strategies to the class website. It can be found under the “Reading Strategies” tab. We had a fabulous trip to the zoo for our animal research (check out the pictures under our photo albums tag). Now first graders are working hard to complete their alphabet pages. Be sure to come watch us share our alphabet book during the October 12 morning assembly!

We are now into our second week of first grade. We have begun to explore the genre of alphabet books and to read books by our current featured author, Bill Martin, Jr. We have also started to learn about different types of animals. Students will be creating an alphabet book of different animals. They are in the process of deciding which animals they would like to study as we prepare for our research field trip to the zoo next week. First graders are off and rolling!
