Math at WilsonOur mathematics curriculum involves problem-solving, reasoning, making connections, communicating, and exploring the world. Key concepts and skills are introduced in the early childhood and primary grades through exploration with concrete materials and manipulatives. In the upper grades, we concentrate upon the mastery of computational skills, problem-solving and critical thinking activities. Our students learn: the basic facts, numeration and estimation, data analysis, probability, graph theory, matrices, and mathematical systems, including real numbers, whole numbers, integers, fractions, and geometry. Beginning in senior kindergarten through third grade, the children are exposed to CSMP (Comprehensive School Mathematics Program). Also, they have access to Accelerated Math, a computerized program that is networked through the iMacs from third grade through sixth grade. In addition, the math program offers opportunities for students to participate in enrichment activities, such as Equations, Math Olympiad, the Missouri Council for Teaching Mathematics contest, and the nationwide Mathematics League contest. By providing a sequentially-oriented mathematics program from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, at times integrated with other subject areas such as science, our students are more than prepared to meet future academic challenges at the secondary school level. |
